Kowhai Flowers

Kowhai Coders

We are Kiwis (New Zealanders) who live on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. We are surrounded by trees, sea and native birds. Most trees in New Zealand never lose their leaves in winter, but the Kowhai tree is one exception. When it does, it blankets the ground with a thick yellow carpet of flowers.

The idea of creating a game for mobile devices was my daughter's. I had been developing Java apps for Hospital Laboratories, but had never created a phone app. She had, and challenged me to try. She gave me a few pointers (and a bit of help along the way) and set me the task of coming up with an idea, and creating a working app. The Hangman app was my answer to that challenge.

Hangman

Hangman is a classic word game, traditionally played with pen and paper - or chalk and blackboard. It is fun and educational, yet the concept is so simple and adaptable - making it suitable for any reading age or ability, from beginners to crossword fanatics.

There are many App versions of the game, but this version has a combination of features which make unique:

  • Ad-free - so you don't have to stop after each few games and wait for an advertisement to complete
  • Over 5000 hand-chosen words
  • Choose the number of allowable wrong guesses - from 6,8,10 or 12
  • Words are divided into 4 subsets - from common to rarely used words. You can choose, not just a single subset, but from a range of subsets that suit your vocabulary and mood
  • Two-person mode (requires sharing the same phone) which allows one person to enter a word (or phrase) and the other to guess it.
  • Choice of UK or US spelling
  • Play it off-line (though to access the dictionary requires an internet connection)
  • Simple, uncluttered screen
  • Dark and light themes (dark theme uses less battery)
